Champions League Fall Out: Chelsea Sacks Manager Thomas Tuchel

After losing to Dinamo Zagreb at the opening game of the UEFA Champions League match on Tuesday, Chelsea have sacked manager Thomas Tuchel. Chelsea also sits sixth on the Premier League table after six games having also started poorly.

Meanwhile, Chelsea spent a record £272 million during the 2022 summer transfer window, making it the biggest single market from an individual team in the history of the game. It came amid a watershed period in the club’s history, with Todd Boehly taking the reins of the Stamford Bridge side after Roman Abramovich was effectively ousted for political reasons.

Recall the new owner, who is an American billionaire appointed himself as the West London club’s interim sporting director following Marina Granovskaia’s departure. As a result, Boehly has flown around the world meeting with agents and clubs to discuss transfer targets, taking the old-fashioned route of in-person meetings.

The sacked Chelsea manager 49-year-old who joined from Borussia Dortmund and Paris St-Germain leaves Stamford Bridge after just 20 months on the job.

Chelsea owner Todd Boehly has placed Tuchel’s coaching staff in temporary charge until a replacement is found. A club statement said the owners believe it is “the right time” to bring in a new head coach to the club.

The statement was quoted to have said, “As the new ownership group reaches 100 days since taking over the Club, and as it continues its hard work to take the club forward, the new owners believe it is the right time to make this transition,” the statement read.

“On behalf of everyone at Chelsea FC, the club would like to place on record its gratitude to Thomas and his staff for all their efforts during their time with the club. Thomas will rightly have a place in Chelsea’s history after winning the Champions League, the Super Cup and Club World Cup in his time here.”

Tuchel was appointed on January 26, 2021, replacing Frank Lampard, and guided the club to their second Champions League title just four months later. He went on to add the UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup later that year.
