Edo State Election: Obaseki Decides, Joins The Peoples Democratic Party

By Editor

Finally after days of very serious consultations, the Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki has crossed over to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) a new political force on which he wants to contest the Edo State governorship elections to realise his second term ambition. The move however did not come to pundits as a surprise – It was long-awaited defection to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which is touted as the largest political party in Africa.

The PDP did not waste time when it announced the defection on its verified Twitter handle, saying, “The Governor of Edo State, H. E. Governor Obaseki has defected to our great Party, the @OfficialPDPNig. The declaration was made this afternoon at the state Secretariat of our party in Benin city, Edo State. Power to the people.”

His declaration for the party means the effective take-over of the state from the All Progressives Congress (APC) from which he resigned recently after being controversially disqualified from contesting the party’s forthcoming gubernatorial primary by a screening committee set up by the APC to clear candidates. It was reported then that Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, the former National Chairman of the APC, who has now been suspended as the chairman midwifed the committee to ensure Obaseki never crossed the line.

When the disqualification announcement was made public, Obaseki and his team said they would not waste their time appealing the matter because the same judges that careened him out would be jury if he decides to appeal. He however told his followers to be calm as he would consult with other stakeholders and revert. Having joined the PDP, Obaseki is expected to emerge the PDP candidate for the 2020 Edo governorship election.
