From all indications, arrangements have been concluded for the inauguration of the Centre of Immigration Law Studies (CILS) in Gregory University Uturu.
Poised to be the first of its kind in Nigeria, Gregory University Uturu Centre for Immigration Law Studies is designed to provide sustainable, coordinated and continuing professional education, training, and capacity building for officers of the Nigeria Immigration Services on contemporary developments in migration management.
The university said the centre will organise professional workshops for officers of the Nigerian Immigration Service, while serving as a research centre that deploys conferences and seminars to explore and dissect key legal and policy issues on migration management. It is also envisaged that the centre will provide advisory services on immigration law and services. When functional, the centre will therefore be a key player in the task of formulating standard policies for migration management in Nigeria.
It is therefore against the backdrop of the crucial importance of expatriate engagement and management in the mobility landscape of the Nigerian business environment, and in recognition of the need for institutionised, comprehensive, coherent and experiential learning opportunities in the field of immigration law in Nigeria, that Gregory University Uturu, Africa’s emerging hub of entrepreneurial education and the Nigerian Immigration Service initiated the mutually beneficial partnership which led to the birth of the Centre of Immigration Law Services.
It was gathered that on Saturday March 13, 2021 critical stakeholders and key players in immigration law management will gather for the historic inauguration of the premiere Centre for Immigration Law Studies. Highlight of the event will be the delivery of inaugural lecture by Prof Epiphany Azinge SAN, the former Director-General of Nigerian Institute of Advanced Legal Studies and elected member of Commonwealth Arbitral Tribunal.
Being a renowned expert in constitutional and immigration law, Prof Azinge will be speaking on the topic, ‘Future of Immigration Law and Policy in Nigeria’. In attendance will be the hierarchy of Nigeria Immigration Service led by the Comptroller-General, Mr Muhammed Babandede, MFR, while the Governor of state, Dr Okezie Ikpeazu will be the chief guest of honor.
