Cristiano Ronaldo has treated his mother to a brand-new Mercedes Benz as the Juventus star celebrated Portuguese Mother’s Day on Sunday. Ronaldo has a close bond with mother Maria Dolores, who has had a huge influence on the five-time Ballon d’Or winner’s career. And the 65-year-old mother-of-four has shown off her latest gift from her children, who splashed out on a Mercedes as a present for her. ‘Thank you to my children for the gifts I received today. Happy day to all mothers,’ she said on Instagram to her 2.2 million followers.

Ronaldo, meanwhile, has taken to social media to wish his mother and Georgina Rodriguez, the mother of one of his four children, a happy Mother’s Day. ‘Happy Mother’s Day to my two special women,’ he said, with two pictures of Maria and Georgina. Portuguese Mother’s Day is celebrated on the first Sunday of May in contrast to the UK date in March. Maria was admitted to Dr Nelio Mendonca hospital in Madeira in March after suffering from a stroke. Ronaldo rushed to be by her side and when she was released from hospital, she updated her followers on her condition.

‘I am lucky to have the opportunity to live, to love my family and have them close to me,’ she said. ‘Thank you to everyone for their support and affection. These have been difficult days, but ones of struggle and victory. Now I’m at home surrounded by the love of my family, my good energy.’ Ronaldo’s sister, Katia Aveiro, also took to social media to wish Maria a happy Mother’s Day. ‘You deserve the world, but renewed mother, but we will be here to take care of you … happy day my beloved old lady,’ she said.
