Elder statesman and former Governor of old Anambra State Senator Jim Nwobodo has condemned the murder of Labour Party Senate candidate for Enugu East, Barr. Oyibo Chukwu. This is even as the Enugu Labour Party guber candidate Hon Chijioke Edeoga informed journalists that moves were on to replace the candidate in line with the provisions of the law.

Nwobodo who was fielding questions from newsmen expressed shock when he was asked why he was yet to speak on the matter. The former governor said he did so with a television station expressing displeasure that such an important news was not aired. He described the act as wicked, inhuman, barbaric insisting that whoever sheds blood has no business in public office or political position.

Speaking in a different interview the LP Huber candidate Hon Edeoga noted that late Barr Oyibo Chukwu worked hard in LP and was poised to be elected as the next senator representing Enugu East having campaigned and canvased for votes in all the wards in Enugu East Senatorial District.

“He put across his views especially on restructuring which he was going to address substantially in the National Assembly if he had gone there. He was poised to win given the fact that in the zone, virtually all the candidates of LP won. He was killed, murdered in cold blood while going home after campaigns.

‘We condemn in most earnest manner, the taking of life in most gruesome manner, for reasons of politics. No one’s life is worth taking in such an unlawful manner because of political aspiration. We pray that his soul rest in peace. We pray that our polity should witness less and less of such unlawful taking of lives. We also hope that his family will get fortitude to bear this huge loss.

“We also wish to inform you that LP has put in place, as the law allows, the machinery to select a new candidate for Enugu East Senatorial District so that on 11th of March, as INEC has said, Labour Party will field a candidate that will replace Oyibo and run the election and win it.

“We’re taking steps, we’re consulting important stakeholders and family members of Oyibo Chukwu to make sure that the person who emerges will meet all expectations both of the zone, Oyibo family and the party generally. Hopefully, the person will win, given the trend in Enugu State at this point in time.”
