Ikoyi 21-storey High-rise Building Collapse Death Toll Now 36

At the time of filing this report, the death toll of the 21-storey building, which collapsed on Gerrard Road in Ikoyi Lagos State on Monday has increased to 36 persons.

The Southwest Zonal Coordinator of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Mr. Ibrahim Farinloye disclosed this on Thursday as part of the agency’s update on the unfortunate incident.

The agency said, “A total of 36 bodies has now been recovered from the collapse, comprising 33 males and three females.” He also revealed that there were nine survivors, consisting of one female and eight males.

Recall that Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the Governor of Lagos State, had ordered an immediate investigation into the collapsed building situated on Gerrard Road, Ikoyi, which was still under construction.

And as a pointer to what the outcome of the probe will be, the state government made it clear that apart from using inferior materials and flouting basic building regulations in the state, the billionaire businessman owner, Femi Osibona, allegedly carried on with the construction without subjecting it to procedural approvals.
