The Imo State Governor, Hon. Emeka Ihedioha earlier today lighted the Unity Torch for the 13th Imo State Sports Festival. The Torch was delivered to the governor by Ms Goodness Duru, the Imo-State born African and World Record holder in Para-Athletics shotput.
The Torch was then carried by the Chairman of Imo Sports Commission, Chief Fan Ndubuoke who in turn handed the torch over to the Governor who then carried out the torch-lighting ritual. The Imo State Sports Festival is slated to commence on the 13th of December 2019. The Festival will have candidates compete for medals in different sporting activities.
In his brief speech at the event, the Governor also stated that the government will award full scale scholarships to candidates who excel at the Sports Festival, which is in line with his administration that indicated at the beginning of his term to revive sports in the state from the grassroots, which will help return Imo to the pinnacle of sporting success. The Unity Torch will make a stop in each of the 27 Local Government Areas of the State, and then make a final stop in Owerri Municipal.
The Unity Torch lighting ceremony, which held at the photo gallery, green area of the Government House Owerri had in attendance the Deputy Governor, Engr. Gerald Irona; the Chief of Staff, Chief Barr. Chris Okewulonu, former House Committee Chairman on Banking and Currency, Hon. Jones Onyereri; the Board Chairman of Heartland FC, Chief Barr. Charles Ezekwem, among other government officials.
