Ikenga Ugochinyere, the spokesperson for the Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP) has called on the President Muhammadu Buhari to immediately order the Department of State Services (DSS) to release the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

The outspoken politician and activist said he believes that the release of Kanu by the federal government will not only help tackle insecurity but will being back peace and stability in the Southeast.

Releasing Kanu from DSS custody, the CUPP spokesperson said would assist in helping to fight insecurity in the Southeast and lay the foundation for peace, reconciliation, and address all grievances. Ugochinyere, is the Peoples Democratic Party candidate seeking to represent Ideato Federal Constituency, Imo State in the House of Representatives in the forthcoming election.

Ugochinyere said with the escalating insecurity in the South-East, Buhari should show statesmanship and fatherly introspection by ensuring Kanu’s release from detention to restore peace to the region.

The CUPP spokesperson said, “The government’s disregard for the court rulings acquitting Kanu of all terrorism charges is quite saddening. In October last year, the Abuja Division of the Court of Appeal discharged the IPOB leader of the terrorism charges brought against him by the Federal Government. This followed an earlier ruling of Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court in Abuja in April, dismissing eight of the 15 amended counts filed against him by the Federal Government.

“The court struck out all the remaining seven charges against Mazi Kanu. The court also discharged and acquitted the embattled leader of IPOB, declaring as illegal and unlawful his abduction from Kenya to Nigeria on July 9, 2021, and quashed the entire terrorism charges brought against him by the Federal Government.
