Nigeria Records First COVID-19 Related Death

Maybe the government will take the matter a little more seriously now that the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has confirmed the first Coronavirus (COVID-19) death in the country. Only at the weekend, the Lagos State government officials were celebrating the fact that the index case, the Italian man who imported the disease into Nigeria has tested negative.

The NCDC via its Twitter handle, @NCDCgov, earlier today (Monday March 23, 2020) tweeted, “The first #COVID19 death in Nigeria has been recorded. The case was a 67-year-old male who returned home following medical treatment in the United Kingdom. He had underlying medical conditions- multiple myeloma and diabetes and was undergoing chemotherapy.”

It is sad that the government in Nigeria is yet to announce a total lockdown of offices especially with the growing number of people that have tested positive to the deadly disease. Going by how the virus spread like wildfire in Italy, Nigeria, experts believe can stem the spread if people are ordered to stay away from offices for some time.
