The Super Eagles of Nigeria played a 1-1 draw with Equatorial Guinea in their opening Group A fixture at the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cote d’Ivoire on Sunday.
Nigerian striker, Victor Osimhen, scored in the 38th minute to cancel out an Ivan Salvador goal two minutes earlier. The Eagles of Nigeria played below expectations and wasted so many opportunities they had to bury the game while Equatorial Guinea grew in the game and the clocks ticked down.
Just yesterday the host nation Côte d’Ivoire who is in the same group as Nigeria began their 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) campaign with a comfortable 2-0 win over Guinea Bissau.
Just like Nigeria did, they began the match the brighter of the two sides and were duly rewarded as early as the 4th minute when Seko Fofana finished off an assist from his captain, Franck Kessie. They doubled their advantage in the 58th minute when Jean-Philippe Krasso finished off a well-crafted effort.
Guinea Bissau who were second best in the entire match made a late rally and called Cote d’Ivore’s goalkeeper into action, but the Elephants held on to win 2-0. With the win, Cote d’Ivoire top Group A with three points, ahead of Nigeria and Equatorial Guinea who are both on one point each.
