Asisat Oshoala Wins Female African Footballer Of The Year For Fifth Time

Super Falcons forward, Asisat Oshoala who left the ongoing 2022 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco as a result of the knee injury she sustained during the group stages of the competition has won a record fifth African Female Footballer of the Year at the African Football Award in Rabat, Morocco.

The football awards organised by the Confederation of African Foodball (CAF) took place on on Thursday July 21, 2022, in Morocco. Oshoala, the Barcelona of Spain striker, became the first African Footballer, male or female, to win the best footballer award for fifth time. She beat off competition from Ajara Nchout of Cameroun and Grace Banda of Zambia to win the award.

Oshoala was rewarded for a stellar season in Europe where she won the Pichichi award for the highest goal scorer in the Spanish Female League despite playing fewer matches because of injuries. She won the league and cup with Barcelona and reached the final of the UEFA Champions League with Barcelona.

She dedicated the award to her Super Falcons team mates who despite playing against the host nation Morocco with two players down were able to stretch the game to extra time before loosing to Morocco on penalties.

After failing in their quest to reach the tenth final, the Super Falcons of Nigeria will face the Copper Queens of Zambia in the third place match of the ongoing 2022 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) tonight.

Both teams have already booked a spot at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup. The winning team will get the bronze medal while the losing team will finish overall fourth in the tournament.
