Sanusi Muhammadu Lamido Sanusi has been restored as the Emir of Kano. Recall that the former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) was deposed by the then Governor of Kano State, Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje on March 9, 2020, on what many considered flippant political egoism.
Governor Abba Yusuf, who signed the Emirate Council (Repeal) Bill 2024 passed by the Kano State House of Assembly earlier on Thursday, announced the development after meeting with the kingmakers. The Kano State Emirates Council (Amendment number 2) Law, 2024, was sponsored by the Majority Leader, Hon. Lawan Hussaini Chediyar Yan Gurasa, who represents the Dala constituency.
The law, which created five new emirates, was first assented to by Ganduje, on 5 December 2019. He assented to an amendment to the law on October 14, 2020, and signed another amendment on April 11, 2023.
Section 3(1) of the law established five distinct emirates – Kano, Bichi, Rano, Gaya and Karaye, with Kano and Karaye having eight Local Government Areas (LGAs) of jurisdiction each, while Bichi and Gaya emirates share nine LGAs of jurisdiction each, Rano Emirate enjoys jurisdiction over 10 out of the 44 LGAs in Kano State.
