After a nationwide investigative assessment of all the 36-state governors, New Telegraph, one of Nigeria’s national newspapers based in Lagos, has declared Borno Governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, as Nigeria’s Governor of the Year, 2021, on Education and Housing.
Managing Director/Editor-In-Chief of the newspaper Mr. Ayodele Aminu announced the award in a letter addressed to Governor Zulum. The MD also announced a formal presentation of the award is scheduled to hold on November 19, 2021, at the Balmoral Convention Centre in Victoria Island, Lagos.
“We write to congratulate Your Excellency on your nomination as a Nigeria’s Governor Of The Year, 2021 (Education & Housing)”, the letter reads.
Zulum’s selection was the outcome of a nationwide assessment of performances recorded by governors across Nigeria’s 36 states. Zulum has, within two years, received dozens of awards and honours, half of which came from board of editors and journalists in respected news organisations that hold public office holders accountable.
Zulum has since emerged Tell Magazine’s Governor of the Year, 2020; Vanguard Newspapers Personality of the Year, 2021; Blueprint Newspapers Person of the Year, 2020; Leadership Newspapers’ Personality of the Year, 2020; Tell Magazine’s Governor of the Year, 2020; Zik Prize for Leadership 2020 and Silverbird’s Special Award for Outstanding Leadership.
The rest include Muslim Personality of the Year, 2019; Igbere TV’s Governor of the Year, NUJ’s Most Promising First Term Governor in Nigeria; Fellowship of National Post Graduate Medical College, 2021; University of Ibadan Alumni of the Year 2020; Award by Nigerian Institution of Agricultural Engineering, National Honour of Ordre National Du Niger Grand Officer which is Nigeria’s equivalent of Grand Commander of the Order of Niger (GCON) conferred by President of Niger Republic, and Community Pillar Award, 2020 among others.
