A former presidential aide and journalist, Reuben Abati, has criticized President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s management of Nigeria’s economy.
He stated that Nigerians are now experiencing significant embarrassment regarding economic management, a situation that would prompt laughter from former President Muhammadu Buhari.
Abati, who is an anchor of The Morning Show on ARISE TV, said, “We now find ourselves in a situation where former President Muhammadu Buhari will be laughing. He might say, ‘Okay, I think these Yoruba people claim they know how to manage the economy. Well, it’s now in their hands, and they have mismanaged it.’
“What we are experiencing is a glaring embarrassment in economic management from people in the Southwest who profess to be better at it. We have yet to see any evidence of this. School fees have increased, and do you know that a stick of Suya now costs N1850? We can’t even afford Suya anymore, all within just one or two weeks.”
He also lamented how Lagos State, which was supposed to be Nigeria’s business hub, has, in his view, been reduced to “a ghost town.”
“How many vehicles do you see on the road now? People are re-evaluating their lifestyles. Everyone is affected; husbands are beginning to go to the market to ensure their wives do not overspend on groceries,” he decried.
Tinubu has faced heavy criticism over his handling of the economy which has seen the Naira depreciate and Nigerians pay more for Petroleum Motor Spirit.
