The visit of the campaign train of Engr Ken Eze, All Progressive Congress (APC) candidate for Ebonyi Central Senatorial District to Ezzagu Ward 1 in the Ishielu Local Government Area of Ebonyi State on Saturday, had already been concluded successfully.
But as the teeming supporters waited to depart, unknown gunmen invaded the venue and suddenly dispersed the mammoth crowd with a terrific shootout. Giving an eyewitness account, a native of the area, comrade Ben Nworie told our correspondent that at about 5:30p.m. on the fateful day, he received a distressed call from his wife, Eunice, who was at the venue of the rally, as she spoke to him in an emotion laden voice.
His words: “She narrated to me that she was calling me from a bush where she scampered for safety, and immediately I sent a rescue team from my nearby village. She was however unhurt.”
Continuing, he said, “She was conveyed to the venue by the National president of Ogboji General Assembly, John Anyalagu; his wife and younger brother, Emeka Nwusulor.
According to him, the unexpected happened as his wife Emeka stood by the roadside, waiting for John to drive out his car for them to race back to Abakaliki, when the hoodlums struck and killed Emeka.
It was also gathered that in a manner that appears to be a total fulfilment of their mission, the hoodlums also burnt a Hiace Toyota bus and one ash coloured Vehicle before they zoomed off.
Comrade Nworie who is the vice chairman of the Ebonyi State Council of NUJ, further commiserated with the family of the deceased adding that he has paid a supreme price for the APC in the state. He regretted what he described as proliferation of firearms in Ebonyi State and called on security agents in the state, to brace up to their duties.
