Femi Falana, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), has commented on the arrest of Joe Ajaero, the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS). Ajaero was apprehended by DSS agents on Monday morning at Abuja Airport while he was en route to London.
In an interview with reporters, Falana, who serves as legal counsel to Ajaero, clarified that Ajaero’s arrest was not connected to a previous invitation from the Nigeria Police Force. He stated, “The police had rescheduled their invitation to Comrade Joe Ajaero last week. I have been in touch with police authorities, and the arrest is unrelated to that invitation.”
He said, “The invitation to Comrade Joe Ajaero by the police was rescheduled last week. I have contacted the police authorities. The arrest is not related to the police invitation. Comrade Ajaero was on his way to London to attend the ongoing TUC Conference when he was arrested at the airport this morning by the SSS. No reason has been provided for the arrest by the SSS.”
The embattled NLC president had earlier been invited by the police in relation to what the force called a “threat to public peace.” However, the invitation was later rescheduled.
