One person said to be a female was reported dead and several others injured as gunmen attacked a campaign rally of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), in Enugu State on Wednesday. It was gathered that the assailants stormed Awgu Ward one campaign venue of the PDP and opened fire on party members.
The tragic Enugu West rally was to be attended by Engr. Osita Ngwu, the PDP senatorial candidate, Chief Anayo Onwuegbu, House of Reps candidate for Awgu/Aninri/Oji-River Federal Constituency, many other candidates and party members. A trending video showed the moment a female victim was being carried to a hospital after sustaining gunshot wound.
The party had successfully held the rally at a ward in Awgu local government and the candidates and their campaign team were on their way to the affected ward when they were alerted that the gunmen had attacked their supporters at the second venue.
“It appears the hoodlums came there to disrupt the rally, but the event was yet to start when they arrived. The attack was unfortunate because there is no need for it.”
“We later visited the injured persons at the hospital where they were rushed for medical attention. One of the persons shot, a woman, died in the attack,” a member of the party told the media. The PDP in the state is yet to speak on the ugly development, just as the State Police Command has not commented on the incident for now.
