Survivors and aggrieved families on Saturday narrated their ordeals in the hands of suspected killer-herdsmen that invaded Mgban Primary School in Nyiev Council Ward in the Guma Local Government Area of Benue state on Friday.
Scores of people were killed in the attack. The district head of Nyiev Community, Bernard Shawa, said he lost two of his sons to the attack. Narrating her ordeal as well, one of the survivors, Mnenna Orkega, said she and her children had gone to sleep only to be woken up by indiscriminate gunshots.
Orkega, who lost her 10-year-old daughter, said, “I and my children were already asleep, but we were woken up by gunshots that swept over here.” Speaking in the Tiv language, the woman said she attempted to escape through the window when one of the herdsmen grabbed her child and killed her.
On his part, the community head, Bernard said, “I lost two of my sons during the attack, this was not the first time these people (herdsmen) were attacking us here. There was an attack on the day of the presidential election, February 25, 2023, during which 12 persons were killed,” he said.
The traditional ruler appealed to state and federal governments to stop the killing of innocent people in the state.
