Prof. Akin Abayomi, the Lagos State Commissioner for Health, who recently tweeted that he had contracted the coronavirus (COVID-19) has assured Nigerians that he is “slowly getting better” from the infection but presently experiencing coarse voice because of what he described as ‘active COVID-19.’
Prof. Abayomi, who got infected with the dreaded disease and broke the news on Monday through his Twitter handle said he was surprised that it took that long for him to contract the disease. The Lagos commissioner shared this on Wednesday on his Twitter account, noted that on many occasions he had thought that he had contracted the disease due to his exposure in the line of duty. He urged Nigerians to follow all coronavirus safety protocols and assured he is not that unwell and that he is slowly getting better.
He said, “It surprises many and myself that it took this long for me to contract COVID-19. I thought on many occasions that I had contracted it as I have been exposed on several occasions. Immediately some members of my family lost their sense of taste and smell, I knew I had been at risk and it is not surprising that I tested positive.
“I have been a little bit under the weather, but it is not a serious case. My advice to the public is that they should follow all #COVID19 safety protocols. Right now, my voice is a bit coarse because I have active #COVID19 at the moment. However, I am not that unwell, and I am slowly getting better,” he wrote on his Twitter handle on Wednesday.
The commissioner who has been very active in the battle to contain the dreaded disease in Lagos State on Monday broke the news of his infection and said he was obliged to make the incident public. “With utmost sense of responsibility, I am obliged to make it known to the general public that I have tested positive to #COVID19,” Abayomi wrote on his Twitter handle.
