After losing their opening English Premier League (EPL) game in a woeful manner, Manchester United on Tuesday defeated Luton Town 3-0 in the third round of the Carabao Cup. The beautiful story started when Juan Mata converted a penalty just before the half, before Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood all scoring late to upend the underdogs at Kenilworth Road. The win will see Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men take on either Preston North End or Brighton in the fourth round of the competition.
Mata’s strike came in the 44th minute after Luton Town coughed up a ball at the back. Left-back Brandon Williams was taken down by a clumsy challenge from George Moncur and the former Chelsea and Valencia man calmly scored from the spot. United goalkeeper Dean Henderson made a stunning save from a corner, and Eric Bailly cleared a subsequent shot off the line in the 81st to maintain the one-goal margin and avoid a potential penalty shootout. Rashford and Greenwood then put the final touches on the win with a pair of cool finishes in the final minutes.
