Manchester City has maintained its lead at the Premier League with a 4-1 their next-door neighbour, Manchester United at Etihad Stadium on Sunday March 6, 2022. It was a derby that further showed the actual depletion of Manchester United, which a lot of pundits are not speaking up about.
City – just 2-1 up at half-time – worked tirelessly throughout the second period to stretch that lead. But at the same time, metaphorically speaking, this was a stroll for them. United did not lay a glove on City in the second period. It is hard to recall City goalkeeper Ederson doing a single thing of note during that time and by the end the shot count stood at 24 against five.
Kevin De Bruyne hit double; one in the fifth and second in the 33rd minutes, while Jadon Sancho pulled one back for United in the 22nd minute. As Manchester United players fizzled out in the second half, City upped their game to grab their third through a perfect corner kick converted by Riyad Mahrez. Mahrez made it four in the 86th minute.
No doubt, Manchester United missed their main strikers, Cristiano Ronaldo, Eddison Cavani, and defender Raphaël Varane, however, that was not enough reason for their defensive frailties in the game dominated by City with 85 percent ball possession in the second half.
