It was a bloody Sunday in Nibo, a community in the Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra State, as an unknown number of individuals were killed during a cult clash. A video making the rounds on social media indicated that the assailants stormed Oye Nwochichi market by Nibo Old Maternity on Sunday afternoon and opened fire on the victims.
It was reported that the gunmen arrived in a brown Lexus 300 Jeep. After carrying out their attack, they sped off to Eke Nibo Market, where they opened fire again, resulting in more casualties. Though an official death toll has yet to be confirmed, a local source stated that at least 10 bodies have been recovered so far.
In response to the incident, SP Ikenga Tochukwu, spokesperson for the Anambra State Police Command, confirmed the attack in a statement to the press, revealing that it stemmed from a clash between rival cult groups.
He added that the State Commissioner of Police, CP Nnaghe Obono Itam, has ordered the immediate deployment of additional personnel to the area and urged witnesses to come forward with information.
“The Command is aware of a suspected cult-related clash that occurred on 20/10/2024 in Nibo, Awka South LG. The Commissioner of Police, CP Nnaghe Obono Itam, has mandated the immediate deployment of additional operatives to the area for necessary action.
“Preliminary reports are still emerging, and we urge witnesses of this incident to share any information that may help identify the perpetrators for possible arrest.
