Moroccan fans have come from not just Morocco, but from all over the Arab world to see if the Atlas Lions of Morocco can become the first African side to reach the World Cup semi-finals. As of the time of this report, Moroccan and Portuguese fans are already at the Al Thumama Stadium in huge numbers too, most wearing Morocco shirts but all carrying flags and some wearing fantastic hats for good measure.
Morocco football journalist Amine el Amri, speaking to the World Football in Qatar podcast: “I have slept very little since the Spain win because the adrenaline has kicked in every night. It was a once in a lifetime experience. We had a reality check four years ago against Portugal [lost 1-0 at the 2018 World Cup].
“We made history in 1986 by beating Portugal [Morocco’s first World Cup win] and we are ready to make another history against Portugal. It’s going to be a bigger challenge than against Spain but we’re up to it.”
