The Ogun State Police Commissioner, CP Frank Mba, on Monday led armed security personnel to tackle unrest in some parts of Sagamu where rioters touched no fewer than three commercial banks and cart away the Mace at the Sagamu Local Government secretariat in Sagamu.
Youths in the ancient town had embarked on violent protests against the scarcity of newly redesigned Naira notes and fuel, burning three commercial banks. The rioters invaded the Sagamu Local Government secretariat, and carted away the mace of the council’s legislative house.
The angry youths barricaded the major highways in Sagamu Monday morning. The protesters kicked against the policy of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) banning the old N500 and N1000 notes, even when the new ones are unavailable. A youth in Sagamu told our correspondent that some banks were partly torched. This prompted the state police command and other security agencies to deploy security personnel, led by CP Frank Mba to the ancient town to restore peace.
We gathered that some arrests have been made. The state police spokesperson, SP Abimbola Oyeyemi, said “normalcy has been restored in greater parts of Shagamu now”.
