The Enugu State government has advised residents to desist from burning tyres and other inflammable items on the roads during this night’s New Year cross-over celebration. This is contained in a statement issued on Sunday in Enugu State by the Commissioner for Information and Communication, Aka Eze Aka.
The statement reads, “Enugu State government has received with concern reports of acts of incineration, carnage, and bonfire on some public places, in the name of celebrating the new year. By these acts some persons out of misplaced excitement, callousness, disregard to rules and order damage public property.
“The worst of such acts is the making of bonfires or setting of tyres on fire in the middle of the tarred roads which cause excessive damage to public roads constructed with millions of taxpayers and state funds. Also, the unguarded practices create unimaginable overflow of ESWAMA waste buckets and dust bins.
“Let it be known that these wrong practices can no longer be condoned by the Enugu State Government as they pose serious danger to residential buildings and the environment. It cannot be said that it is in the spirit of the Yuletide or New year that would make anyone to destroy public property or facilities meant for the general good.
“Security agencies including neighbourhood watch, the police and others are hereby enjoined to ensure that these bonfires are not carried out in any part of the state as the people usher in the New Year. Offenders shall be prosecuted according to environmental and other relevant laws.”
