Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Correspondents’ Chapel Enugu State has elected a new Executive that will administer the affairs of the Union for the next three years. The election and swearing-in of the new Executive took place on Monday 12 August 2024 at the Chapel Secretariat, No. 22, Edinburgh Road Ogui New Layout, Enugu.
The newly elected Chapel Chairman, Comrade Lawrence Njoku of The Guardian clinched the position for the second tenure. Comrade Emma Ugwueze of Daily Post, who was the former Secretary got the position of Vice Chairman. Others included Comrade Chinedu Ikpechukwu of the Daily Sun as the Secretary, Comrade Chinedu Adonu of Vanguard as the Financial Secretary while Ebere Agu Ekeopara of BBC holds the position of treasurer.
NewsBits, however, reports that in the election which was held unopposed by all the candidates, two vacant positions, Assistant Secretary and Auditor are yet to be filled. Chairman of NUJ, Enugu State Council, Comrade Sam Udekwe who took the elected officers on oath of office, charged them to carry out their functions according to the dictate of the NUJ Constitution.
Comrade Udekwe also expressed confidence in the new Exco, some of them participated in the former executive to perform even better than what they did in the past. In an acceptance speech on behalf of the new Exco, Comrade Njoku promised to surpass his former achievements of moving the Chapel forward.
He acknowledged that although times were hard but insisted that he would pursue the welfare of members which is part of the primary objective they were elected. “My assurance to you this morning is that what you have done is to say yes that you liked what we did in the last three years. We promise to serve you better,” he said, and advised the members to continue to support the union.
