NUJ Tasks Governor Mbah On Water Reticulation To Other Parts Of Enugu

By Tony Adibe

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Enugu State Council has tasked the state Governor, Dr Peter Mbah on the urgent need to distribute potable water to other parts of the Enugu metropolis where, hitherto, water reticulation has not yet reached.

This was contained in a communiqué issued on Friday by the Enugu NUJ at the end of its Congress held on September 26, at the Press Centre on Rangers Avenue, Enugu, which the State Chairman, Comrade Sam Udekwe presided over.

NewsBits reports that in the last 180 days the Governor Mbah-led administration broke the over 2-decade-old water jinx, places such as Thinkers Corner, GRA, Ogui New Layout, Uwani, University of Nigeria Enugu Campus, (UNEC), etc have been enjoying water supply. But other areas such as Idaw River Layout, Achara Layout, Garki, Coal Camp, among others have not been supplied with water.

Although Congress commended Governor Mbah for the giant developmental projects his government has embarked on in the state, especially the provision of potable pipe-borne water, the NUJ, however, asked the Governor to “extend the reticulation of the pipe-borne water to some other areas, hitherto unreached, like Garriki and others within Enugu metropolis.”

The Congress also advised the State Government to establish a task force that would checkmate the negative activities of scavengers otherwise known as ‘Iron Condemn’. It emphasised the need to stop negative activities/operations of scavengers due to the nuisance they constitute in the Enugu metropolis, particularly in terms of stealing people’s valuables in the guise of scavenging.

The NUJ bemoaned the high electricity tariff being charged Enugu residents who had been classified into ‘Band A’ and other bands, insisting that the high electricity tariff was uncalled for. The Union appealed to the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) to declassify some areas from ‘Band A’ because of the high tariff, especially residential areas.

“Congress further advises EEDC to ensure it supplies power commensurate with the high tariff that accompanies Band A grading,” stated in the communique. The communique, signed by the Council chairman Comrade Sam Udekwe, was made available to reporters by the Secretary, Comrade Ifeoma Amuta.
