All is now set for inauguration of the Association of Traditional Medicine Practitioners (ESATMEP), Enugu State Chapter, slated for Saturday, May 4, this year. The event is expected to hold at open podium in Enugu North Local Government Council Secretariat, Enugu, beginning at 11:00am in the morning.
Briefing newsmen on their plans for the inauguration, Chief Nwaweniteaku Aniamulueze (Dr) through the Secretary of the association, Madus Mathias (Dr), said the event would feature lectures on traditional medicine practice, meritorious awards, cultural dance, free treatment, among others. He explained that it became imperative to form the association in view of the efficacy of roots and herbs in medical therapy.
According to him, “Traditional medicine refers to health practices, approaches, knowledge and beliefs incorporating plant, animal and mineral based medicines, spiritual therapies, manual techniques and exercises, applied singularly or in combination to treat, diagnose and prevent illnesses or maintain well-being.”
He further said, “In the last decade traditional medicine has become very popular in Nigeria, partly due to the long unsustainable economic situation in the country. The high cost of drugs and increase in drug resistance to common diseases like malaria, bacterial infections and other sexually transmitted diseases has caused the therapeutic approach to alternative traditional medicine as an option for concerted search for new chemical entities (NCE).”
Accompanied the Chairman and the Secretary at the briefing were: Chinecherem Onovo (Dr), Financial Secretary, Chinyereugo Orji (Dr), Treasurer, Obiageli Udenwa (Dr), Public Relations Officer.
