About 427 Nigerians trapped in the war-torn Ukraine arrived at the Nnamdi Azikwe International airport, Abuja on Friday morning aboard Max Air aircraft. The evacuees, most of them students, made the journey from Romania where they had escaped to after Russia invaded Ukraine.

Details of the arrival were still sketchy as of the time of handing in this report. Meanwhile, Air Peace charter flight scheduled yesterday to evacuate Nigerians who fled from Ukraine to Poland was postponed due to hitches. An official of the ministry of foreign affairs, Mr. Bolaji Akinremi, said the flight was postponed due to a delay in preparing passengers’ documents for the check-in process.

Recall that the federal government engaged Air Peace and Max Air to evacuate over 2,000 of its nationals from Poland, Romania, Hungary and Slovakia. The Nigerians fled Ukraine, amid a Russian invasion, to the neigbouring countries, according to the minister of foreign affairs, Mr. Geoffrey Onyeama. The federal government on Wednesday said it approved $8.5 million for the evacuation.

According to the minister of state for foreign affairs, Mr. Zubairu Dada, the countries where the pickup flights were scheduled include Poland, Hungary, Slovakia and Romania.
