Hours after Governor Similanayi Fubara requested the Rivers State House of Assembly to present the 2025 Appropriation Bill, the House adjourned plenary indefinitely on Friday. This adjournment occurred just hours after the governor revealed he had sent a second letter to the House regarding the presentation of the state’s 2025 budget.

The decision to adjourn was made during a plenary session presided over by Speaker Martins Amaewhule. Our reporter was unable to confirm whether the Speaker received the governor’s letter.

In the letter addressed to the Speaker, Governor Fubara indicated his intention to present the budget on March 19, 2025, while also inviting the House to select an alternative date for the presentation. After failing to meet a 48-hour ultimatum set by the lawmakers, Fubara attempted to present the budget at the Assembly complex on Wednesday, only to find the gate locked.

The indefinite adjournment has disrupted the governor’s efforts to reconcile with the 27 lawmakers loyal to his estranged predecessor, former governor Nyesom Wike, in the aftermath of the Supreme Court ruling.
