The newly inaugurated president of the Nigerian Institution of Surveyors, NIS, Chief Pius Chukwuemeka Eze, has pledged to lift the Nigerian Institution of Surveyors to, ‘unprecedented heights.”
Eze, the 24 President of the Institution, made the pledge at the weekend in his acceptance speech after his inauguration at the end of the 59th Annual/Conference held at the International Conference Centre, ICC, Enugu.
Surveyor Eze, who commended the past executive led by Prof. Matthew Olomolatan Ibitoye for his efforts at transforming the profession, pledged to improve on the legacy and urged his colleagues to join him in actualising the dream of transforming the profession the more.
“I call on every member, young and seasoned, to join me in this transformative journey. Let us build on the proud legacy of those before us and elevate the Nigerian Institution of Surveyors to unprecedented heights,” he urged.
He explained how he intends to do the transformation: “We will harness cutting-edge technologies from geospatial data analytics to digital mapping to transform how we survey, plan, and build our communities.
“Continuous professional development will be our cornerstone. I am committed to ensuring every member has access to world-class training and resources to excel in their field.
“The future of Surveying lies in our youth. We will launch mentorship programmes, scholarships, and career pathways to nurture the next generation of leaders, and we shall amplify our voice in policy circles advocating for the critical role Surveyors play in sustainable development, land management, and national security,” he said.
The keynote speaker at the occasion, Prof. Christian Anieke of the Godfrey Okoye University, Enugu, appraised the prime role surveying play in society and said that no surveyor would go to hell.
“I don’t think any surveyor will go to hellfire because of the important role they play in society,” the clergyman Vice Chancellor said. Anieke cited some scriptures to show that the surveying profession has a spiritual connotation and pointed out that Artificial Intelligence (AI and improvement in sciences can never displace the survey practice.
“AI and cloud computing are making people jittery that AI will take over our jobs. It might be a very powerful tool, but it cannot take the place of our job.
“New technologies cannot replace human beings. It is a help, but it will not take over the job of men. Human beings still remain crucial in interpreting data,” he assured. While acknowledging the importance of AI, the keynote speaker said that though ,”AI is transforming surveying job, Surveyors are still very important,” he declared.
