The Nigerian Government has described as fake news reports being circulated that the admission age into secondary schools in the country has been pegged at 12 years. Reports went viral last week that the federal government of Nigeria has now fixed 12 years as the minimum admission age into secondary schools.
The development created confusion as it came weeks after 16 years was announced as the minimum wage for entry into tertiary institutions. However, giving a clarification on Tuesday, the Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, said the 12-year claim was false. He spoke during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today.
According to the minister, “The admission age into JSS is 10 years, it’s not 12 years.”
The university remains 16 years. “That was fake and malicious news that was sent out, and the Ministry of Education quickly sent a clarifying question to that. To get admitted from primary six to GSS 1 is 10 years. Universities remain 16 years; that’s settled,” he clarified.
