President John Dramani Mahama has removed the Chief Justice of Ghana, Her Ladyship Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkonoo, from office with immediate effect. The decision, announced on Monday, September 1, 2025, was made in line with Article 146(9) of the 1992 Constitution, which requires the President to act in accordance with the recommendations of a committee set up under Article 146(6).
The move follows a petition filed by a Ghanaian citizen, Mr. Daniel Ofori, which led to the establishment of a committee to investigate the matter. After reviewing the petition and examining the evidence, the committee concluded that Justice Torkonoo had engaged in stated misbehaviour as defined under Article 146(1). It therefore recommended her removal.

In compliance with constitutional requirements, President Mahama acted on the committee’s findings and directed her removal from office. The announcement was communicated in a statement by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Member of Parliament and Spokesperson to the President, who emphasized that the action was strictly in accordance with constitutional provisions and due process.
Justice Gertrude Torkonoo, who was appointed as Chief Justice in 2023, becomes the latest head of the Judiciary to leave office through the constitutional impeachment process.
