The Department of State Services, DSS, has alerted of a planned terrorist attack on two states. This is coming three years after terrorists alleged to be members of the Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP), launched a deadly attack on St. Francis Catholic Church, Owo, Ondo State, on June 5, 2022, killing 41 worshippers and injuring dozens.
According to multiple media reports, a security alert has now been raised over another possible attack on some communities in Ondo and Kogi State by the same terrorist group. The DSS, in a confidential letter addressed to the Nigerian Army, 32 Artillery Brigade, revealed the terror group plot to launch coordinated attacks.
In a leaked confidential letter addressed to the Nigerian Army, 32 Artillery Brigade, Akure, Ondo State, identified the target locations to include Oyin-Akoko, Eriti-Akoko both in Akoko North-West Local Council Area and Owo, the headquarters of Owo Local Council Area of the state.
With the letter signed by one H.I, Kana, DSS revealed that the groups have commenced surveillance on potential soft targets in the identified community. The Nigeria’s secret police also stressed the urgency to heightened security measures in the state in order to prevent such attacks from happening.
“Consequently, there is a need to scale up the level of security alertness in the various communities to forestall any untoward situation. While the above is for your information and further action, accept assurances of the highest regard of the State Director of Security, please.”
Confirming the development, the police spokesperson in the state, Olayinka Ayanlade, stated that the command had deployed necessary operational and intelligence assets to swiftly tackle the situation.
