Troops of the Nigerian Army, while on patrol along the Zaki-Biam–Wukari Road in Benue State on Monday, successfully rescued a soldier and nine other individuals who had been abducted by suspected kidnappers.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, Ahmad Zubairu, the Acting Media Information Officer of the Joint Task Force, Operation WHIRL STROKE, revealed that the victims were rescued from a bush after the troops disrupted a kidnapping operation being carried out by suspects disguised in police uniforms near the Quarantine Checkpoint.
According to Mr. Zubairu, the operation was launched following credible intelligence reports indicating kidnapping activities in the area, where the perpetrators were impersonating police officers to deceive unsuspecting travelers.
“Upon receiving the information, the troops mobilised swiftly to the scene. On sighting the approaching soldiers, the kidnappers fled in disarray into nearby bushes. The troops immediately pursued the fleeing suspects, following their tracks deep into the forest. During the search operations, ten kidnapped victims were successfully rescued.
“Among those rescued was Warrant Officer John Richard, a personnel of 6 Brigade Band, Jalingo, while two other victims are still unaccounted for as search operations continue. The rescued individuals were kept in safe custody and debriefed before being handed over to appropriate authorities for further action,” Mr Zubairu said.
The Force Commander, Operation WHIRL STROKE, Major General Moses Gara, praised the troops for their prompt response and unwavering dedication to safeguarding citizens. He also lauded the tactical commander for his outstanding leadership and proactive strategies in tackling criminal activities across the region.
General Gara further encouraged the troops to maintain the momentum and continue to uphold the values of discipline and professionalism in all their operations.
