The Sokoto State Police Command has arrested three suspected members of a notorious cult group known as “Sai Malam”, which has allegedly been recruiting young people through a WhatsApp group called “Red Chamber.”

According to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ahmad Rufa’i, the arrests were made late on Friday, November 28, 2025, during an intelligence-led operation carried out by the Command’s Anti-Kidnapping Unit.

The primary suspect, Usman Shu’aibu, and two others were apprehended around 11:00 p.m. and have reportedly confessed to being part of the unlawful society. During interrogation, the suspects disclosed that they were initiated into the group via the “Red Chamber” WhatsApp platform, which investigators say was created specifically to lure teenagers and young adults into criminal activities.

The police described the cult’s activities as deeply disturbing, listing witchcraft, ritual practices, pursuit of demonic powers, homosexuality, and organized thuggery among the acts allegedly promoted within the group. The development has raised concern over the increasing use of digital platforms by criminal networks to recruit and indoctrinate unsuspecting youths.

In response, the Police Command issued a strong advisory to parents and guardians, urging them to closely monitor their children’s smartphone use, social media habits, and peer groups. They also encouraged families to report any suspicious online activity to the authorities immediately.

Commissioner of Police, CP Ahmed Musa, reassured residents that the Command had acted on public complaints and would continue to dismantle criminal networks threatening peace in the state. “The arrest of these suspects is a clear demonstration that the concerns of the people have been heard. We remain committed to ensuring the safety and security of every citizen,” he said.

The police have intensified efforts to track down remaining members of the “Sai Malam” group and called for continued cooperation from the public as investigations progress.
