L-R: Julius Abure, Alex Otti, and Nenadi Usman
The Labour Party has been hit by another wave of crisis following the sudden sack of the interim National Working Committee (NWC) members.
Recall that after the Supreme Court judgement on the LP leadership, the party’s National Executive Committee named an interim NWC leadership led by Senator Nenadi Usman, with Senator Darlington Nwaokocha as secretary.
The team has been piloting the affairs of the party since then. However, there is now a new twist and as the Board of Trustees (BOT), has dissolved the NWC. It accused the members of failing to carry out the mandate given to them.
BOT’s decision was contained in a strongly worded notice dated December 2, 2025. It said a statutory NEC would soon meet to put in place another NWC. Part of the accusation against the NWC is its failure to organize nationwide congresses and a national convention to elect substantive party executives.
The notice was signed by BOT Chairman, Comrade S.O.Z. Ejiofor, and the Secretary, Comrade Salisu Mohammed. It was angered that over one year after the NWC was set up, it failed to carry out the mandate given to it, leading to the disintegration of the party.
The BOT, however, ordered Senator Usman, Senator Nwaokocha, and members of the NWC to immediately halt all activities being carried out in the name of the Labour Party and hand over all party documents to the BOT Secretary. Meanwhile, the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has since restored the Julius Abure group as the authentic leadership of the Labour Party.
The development has further put confusion in the camp of the 2023 presidential candidate of the LP, Mr Peter Obi. Obi’s next political move remains a subject of speculation as he has yet to quit the party. Governor Alex Otti of Abia State also belongs to the Mr Obi faction of the Labour Party.
There was a rumour weeks back that he planned to defect to the All Progressives Congress, APC, but the governor later dispelled it.
