The Enugu State House of Assembly on Thursday passed the N1.62 trillion appropriation bill for the 2026 fiscal year.

The House Committee Chairman on Finance and Appropriation, Hon Chukwudi Nwankwo, said the figure represented 66.5 per cent higher than the 2025 budget.

He expressed the view that the budget was expected to sustain the momentum the Gov. Peter Mbah-led administration had achieved in the last two years, which he maintained had been impactful.

Nwankwo said that ₦321 billion, representing 20 per cent of the total budget, would go into the recurrent expenditure, while ₦1.29 trillion would be for the capital expenditure.

He said that the budget was built on four clear pillars, comprising empowerment and education, inclusive and people-centred development, good governance, and economic transformation.

He explained that the budget will be financed with ₦870 billion from the Internally Generated Revenue (IGR), ₦387 billion from the Federal Allocation, and ₦329 billion from the capital receipt.

On the sectoral allocation, the Economic sector received the highest allocation of N787 billion, while the social sector was the second, which received N457 billion. The administration sector was allocated ₦42 billion, the Law and Justice sector received ₦7.6billion, while the regional sector got ₦2.5 billion.

While reacting, the Speaker of the House, Hon Uche Ugwu, commended the committees for the thorough job they did with the ministries, departments, and agencies. Ugwu applauded everyone for the spirit of teamwork that enabled them to perform well this year.

He praised the governor’s leadership style, which, according to him, has not only transformed but has also opened up the state to investors, urging him not to rest on his oars. He advised the people to continue to support the state government to enable it to implement its policies and programmes for the betterment of the Enugu people.
