The National President of the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT), Comrade Titus Audu, has threatened to keep all members at home until the Federal Government ensures maximum security of schools.
He gave the warning while speaking at the 8th Nigeria Union of Teachers Jigawa State chapter quadrennial conference held in Dutse. He said the Union is deeply concerned about the state of the nation in the areas of insecurity, especially at schools.
“In the situation where your place of work is not safe for you, I don’t think there is any need for you to go there. Recently, many schools have been attacked, teachers and students killed and abducted,” according to him.
He said that the Union is more concerned with the security of the school to give teachers and students an enabling environment for teaching and learning.
“In the situation where the security of our teachers is not guaranteed, we therefore have no other option than to ask them to stay at home until the problem is solved,” he declared. He urged the federal government to, as a matter of urgency, do its best to ensure the security of schools in Nigeria.
Comdr Dauda A Shua’aibu Guri, the newly elected chairman Jigawa State chapter, promised to carry everybody along to move the union forward. He also promised to protect the interests and ensure the welfare of teachers across the state.
