A teenager has reportedly died inside a swimming pool at a hotel in Owode-Ede, Osun State.
The incident occurred at a hotel located along the Osogbo–Gbongan Road, where the teenager reportedly entered the swimming pool on Thursday, New Year’s Day, NewsBits learnt.
The incident also triggered protests by friends and family members of the deceased. The identity of the deceased was not immediately disclosed, while the precise circumstances surrounding the death remained unclear as of the time of reporting.
It was also gathered that the teenager was found unresponsive in the pool and was later confirmed dead. On Friday, some individuals believed to be friends and relatives of the deceased stormed the hotel premises to protest what they described as the handling of the incident by the hotel management.
The protest was said to have caused tension in the area, raising concerns among residents and passers-by. A source familiar with the development said timely intervention by security agencies prevented the situation from degenerating further.
According to eyewitnesses, “operatives of the Nigeria Police Force and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps were deployed to the scene.
“Police and NSCDC later intervened, and the matter was resolved.”
Confirming the incident, the Deputy Police Public Relations Officer of the Osun State Police Command, ASP Emmanuel Giwa-Alade, said the situation did not involve a mob attack.
“It wasn’t a mob action. It was the family of the victim that went back there to express their grievances, and it was later settled amicably,” Giwa-Alade said.
He added, “The victim died inside the hotel’s swimming pool. Investigation is ongoing, and we will inform the public of our findings.”
