The lifeless body of a yet-to-be-identified young lady has been recovered after a heavy downpour in Enugu State on Saturday evening. The lifeless body was recovered on Chief SN Ugwu Street, off Cornerstone Road, Abakpa, in the Enugu East Local Government Area.
It was gathered that the lady was swept away by the flooding at Timber Market, where she reportedly went to dispose of waste in the drainage during the downpour. A witness stated that while they sought shelter at the market due to the heavy rain, she saw the lady approaching the large drainage to throw in some waste but was unfortunately carried away by the flooding.
“We saw the body floating inside the drainage,” a resident who identified herself as Chioma told a news correspondent. “Her body was caught by a iron rods in one of the culverts and despite the heavy flooding, we managed to recover her,” she continued.
“When she was brought out, she was no longer breathing.” The report understands that the body might have travelled over 800 meters inside the drainage before being recovered. As of the time of this report, police operatives from the Abakpa Police Division have taken the body away.
