Teachers from Enugu State Science, Technical and Vocational Schools Management Board (STVSMB) have received awards of excellence following their exceptional performance at the World Teacher’s Day competition jointly organised by the Lagos State Technical and Vocational Education Board (LASTVEB) and the GIZ Skye.
This was even as the Enugu State House of Assembly (ENHA) sought collaboration with the STVSMB to equip students, particularly the state’s teeming youths with technical, vocational, and other digital skills that would make them self-employed and less dependent on white-collar jobs.
The event, which was held in Lagos over the weekend, aimed at celebrating dedicated technical instructors as well as raising awareness about the value of technical education and the challenges faced by female instructors, was part of the 2024 World Teacher’s Day.
The two instructors who received the awards are Ifeyinwa Ogbodo of the Department of Motor Vehicle Mechanics (Mechatronics) and Frida Nkoloagu of the Department of Agricultural Mechanization, both are teachers at the Government Technical College, Enugu.
Reacting to the awards, the STVSMB Chairman, Dr Amaka Ngene, said the performance did not come as a surprise in view of the huge investment the state governor had committed in the education sector. She further tasked other teachers and staff of the board to emulate the award-winning teachers by being good ambassadors of the state.
In a similar development, the Enugu State House of Assembly has expressed its readiness to partner with the board to actualize the robust educational policies of the Governor Mbah administration, urging all hands to be on deck to take the state to enviable heights the governor had set for the education sector.
The Chairman, House Committee on Education, Hon. Osita Eze, disclosed this when he led members of the committee to pay an oversight and familiarisation visit to the STVSMB office at the weekend.
Congratulating Dr Ngene on her recent appointment, Hon Osita, described the decision by the governor as strategic and timely, adding that the institution would benefit from the wealth of knowledge she would bring into the system.
Osita, a member representing Oji River State Constituency, further noted that the visit would enable them to identify needs and challenges facing the board and also foster healthy relationship between the executive and the legislative arms of government in the state.
He emphasised the significant role of the specialised board in integrating the disruptive innovation, educational policies and philosophy of the Governor Peter Mbah administration in training students and the youths on skills that’ll enable them to create wealth for themselves.
Reacting, the STVSMB Chairman thanked the chairman and his members for the visit, assuring that the board, under her leadership, had already embarked on the journey of building a virile and resilient science, technical and vocational education system that would make graduates of the schools self-employed and self-reliant in the society.
According to her, with the huge investment the governor had committed into education through the ongoing reforms, curriculum remodelling and experiential methods of teaching and learning, the state will set the pace for the region.
She informed the committee about the ongoing state-of-the-art science, technical and vocational schools across all the federal constituencies in the state, adding that the pilot project at the Government Technical College, Enugu, was at a progress stage and students would return to the site in record time.
