Presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 elections, Mr Peter Obi, has broken his silence on the photos circulating on social media showing him with US President Donald Trump and Lagos transport union leader, MC Oluomo.

Our correspondent reports that the images, which emerged on Tuesday, went viral on several social media platforms. Some of the images were accompanied by statements credited to Trump where he hailed Obi.

However, in a statement on Wednesday titled “Clarification on Fake News and Photos” and posted on his X handle, Obi described the images as “fake and doctored,” stressing that he never held such meetings.

“One of such images purports to show me with US President Donald Trump, alongside a fabricated claim that he praised me. Another seeks to depict me with MC Oluomo in his office. Let me state categorically that both pictures are fake and doctored, and the accompanying stories are entirely false,” he said.

Obi noted that the claims were part of “persistent dangers of fake news and disinformation,” warning Nigerians and the international community to remain vigilant, verify information before sharing, and resist propaganda designed to mislead.

He added that if he had attended such meetings, he would have personally disclosed them. According to him, his politics is not about “seeking praise or cheap publicity,” but about addressing Nigeria’s challenges, including insecurity, poverty, education, healthcare, and the rule of law.
