Goodluck Jonathan
Amid the escalating tension in Guinea-Bissau, former President of Nigeria, Goodluck Jonathan, has been escorted out of the country. It was earlier reported that Jonathan and other African leaders were trapped after the military takeover of Guinea-Bissau.
They were part of the joint election observer mission deployed by the African Union (AU), ECOWAS, and the West African Elders Forum (WAEF). However, emerging reports now indicate that Jonathan has been escorted out of Guinea-Bissau by military personnel.
Trouble started in Guinea-Bissau after both incumbent President Umaro Sissoco Embaló and opposition candidate Fernando Dias declared themselves winners of Sunday’s presidential election.
Official results were still being awaited as of the time the military announced that they had taken over the country. Earlier on Thursday, the House of Representatives had urged the Nigerian Government to facilitate Jonathan’s safe return to Nigeria.
The House also asked the Federal Government to rescue other Nigerians trapped in Guinea-Bissau.
