Biafra Provisional Government Marks History Month, Advocates Unity In Self-Determination Campaign

The Biafra Provisional Government has commenced its annual “Biafra History Month,” describing May as a period of deep historical reflection and renewed commitment to its self-determination campaign.

The group said the month holds special significance for people of the South-East and other eastern regions, as it marks the anniversary of the May 30, 1967, declaration of the Republic of Biafra by Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu.

According to the Provisional Government, the observance—now in its eighth year—serves as a platform to highlight what it described as the history, struggles, and aspirations of the Biafran people.

In a statement, the group noted that the month-long programme, running from May 1 to May 31, would showcase past achievements, recount alleged persecutions, and outline plans toward what it termed a peaceful, democratic, and independent Biafran state. It added that the commemoration is also intended to sensitise the international community on the group’s objectives and the challenges faced by its supporters.

President of the Provisional Government, Ibe Nwoko, expressed concern over what he described as “discordant voices” within the movement, warning that internal divisions could hinder progress. Nwoko characterised the disagreements as a “malaise” affecting the struggle and urged members to remain focused on collective goals.

He disclosed that this year’s History Month would feature conferences and public lectures by prominent Biafran figures, aimed at shaping discourse and providing strategic direction for the movement.

Reaffirming the group’s position, Nwoko said the demand for a sovereign Biafran state remains non-negotiable, insisting that the agitation is rooted in the desire for self-determination. He dismissed claims that the name “Biafra” is responsible for setbacks in the struggle, attributing challenges instead to what he described as the conduct of some participants.

The Provisional Government, he said, is taking steps to address these issues, including the introduction of new national symbols such as a redesigned flag and coat of arms.

Nwoko further stated that the vision of the group is to establish a nation that would stand as “a pride of the Black race and Africa,” anchored on stability, democracy and development.

The group called on supporters and the general public to participate in the scheduled activities throughout the month, emphasising the importance of unity in advancing its cause.
