In a statement signed by Amaka Onyemalu, Public Relations Officer of the African Women Lawyers Association (AWLA), Nigeria, Enugu State Branch, made available to newsmen, the women lawyers called against gender-based violence. “The African Women Lawyers Association (AWLA), Enugu State Branch, expresses profound sorrow and indignation over the horrific killing of a young woman, identified as Chinyere, whose life was brutally cut short at Olympic Layout, One-Day, Enugu State”, the statement read.
Speaking on the incident, the State Coordinator of AWLA Enugu State Branch, Chidi Grace Obeke, condemned the act in the strongest terms and called for immediate, uncompromised justice.
“No argument, dispute, or medical allegation justifies the brutal deprivation of human life,” stated Chidi Grace Obeke. “Gender-based violence remains a severe threat to the lives and dignity of women in our society. While we commend the Enugu State Police Command under CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa for the swift arrest of the suspect, we demand a thorough, transparent prosecution to ensure full justice under the law.”
Addressing the reported dispute surrounding HIV status, Obeke emphasized that public ignorance and stigma must be confronted: “A diagnosis of HIV is not a death sentence. With modern medical care and proper adherence to treatment, individuals live healthy, full lives. Misinformation and panic around health conditions can never serve as a pretext for physical violence or murder.”
The State Coordinator also urged young women to prioritize personal safety and maintain strong communication channels with their support systems.
“While the sole legal and moral blame for violence lies with the perpetrator, we strongly advise young women to exercise heightened personal caution. Always ensure that trusted family members or friends are aware of your whereabouts, your relationships, and the individuals you spend time with. Clear communication with loved ones is a vital line of safety”, she added.
“AWLA Enugu State Branch will closely monitor the investigation at the State Criminal Investigation Department (State CID) to ensure that justice is fully served for Chinyere.”
