In a shocking incident last night, gunmen launched a brazen attack on the residence of Mr. Labaran Maku, the former Minister of Information. The incident occurred at Akpata community in Akun, Nassarawa-Eggon Local Government Area in Nasarawa State.
According to reports from the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the assailants struck around 7:50 p.m., catching the security personnel off-guard. The invaders forced their way into the property and began firing shots indiscriminately, resulting in injuries to four security personnel stationed there.
One of the injured security personnel spoke to NAN, recounting the harrowing experience. He mentioned that the attackers were quite numerous and communicated in Hausa language as they attempted to break through the main gate of the house. When he hesitated to open the gate, not knowing their intentions, the criminals resorted to gunfire and eventually scaled the fence to enter the compound.
Reacting to the distressing incident, Labaran Maku expressed his concern about the escalating insecurity in the state. He revealed that this was the third time his residence and family members had been targeted by criminals. Maku recalled a previous incident where his father’s compound was invaded, leading to the kidnapping of three family members. Tragically, two years ago, his elder brother’s children were killed in a similar attack at his brother’s residence in Gudi community of Akwanga Local Government Area.
The former minister lamented that the state seemed to be under siege, with incidents of kidnapping and banditry on the rise in various parts of the region. He urged the authorities to take decisive action to restore security and protect the lives of innocent citizens.
In response to the attack, Governor Abdullahi Sule promptly condemned the act of violence and instructed the security agencies to apprehend the perpetrators. The governor’s Senior Special Assistant (SSA) on Public Affairs, Mr. Peter Ahemba, issued an official statement conveying the governor’s directive to bring those responsible to justice.
The incident has left the community in shock and raised concerns about the overall security situation in the state. Authorities are now intensifying efforts to investigate the attack and enhance security measures to prevent further such occurrences.
