No fewer than 14 out of 990 newly admitted students of David Umahi Federal University Health Sciences (DUFUHS), in Ebonyi State, have been sanctioned for their involvement in examination misconduct, stealing and poor academic performance.
The Vice Chancellor of the university, Professor Jesse Uneke disclosed this at the weekend, during the 4th matriculation ceremony of the university in Uburu, Ohaozara Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.
Professor Uneke explained that two out of the students were expelled for examination misconduct, three were given one semester suspension for stealing; while five received one year suspension for same offence, just as
three were also withdrawn from the university because of their poor academic performances. He urged the newly admitted students to take their studies seriously and shun acts capable of truncating their stay in the school, adding that the university has zero-tolerance to anti-social behaviours.
His words: “David Umahi University of Health Sciences, Uburu, in Ohaozara Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, has zero tolerance for anti-social behaviors. So, you should try to be good ambassadors of this institution and your various families anywhere you find yourselves and more importantly, avoid any act that can affect your stay in the university.”
Uneke stated that the university, which started with 26 students in 2021, has experienced an unprecedented increase in student population and now has a total of 2,496 students. The Vice Chancellor also announced that the university’s cancer center has been fully equipped, adding that the center has treated over 200 cancer patients from different parts of the country, since inception.
According to him, “the university cancer center is fully operational and has treated 200 cancer patients coming from various parts of Nigeria. As of December 2024, the services have been expanded to include chemotherapy. The official flag off of the center will take place on March 8th, 2025.”
The Vice Chancellor further said that the university has maintains high level of discipline and ensures strict compliance to its rules and regulations.
“This university maintains strict discipline in line with our established rules and regulations, and we are unforgiving when any of these rules are violated,” he emphasised.
Uneke further explained that between the last matriculation and the present, the Senate of the University approved disciplinary actions on a total of fourteen students of the institution, depending on the nature of their various offences.
He said, “two of them were expelled due to examination misconduct, three received one year suspension for stealing, five also received one semester suspension for stealing; while the other three were withdrawn from the university because of their poor academic performance.”
