Non-governmental organisation (NGO), Women Support Women Community Network (WOSCONET), on Monday flagged off the commencement of aggressive campaigns in markets and rural areas in Enugu State.

NewsBits reports that the objective of the campaign is to sensitise the people in the rural areas, especially market women, on how to guard against violence against women and girls.

The campaign will also be to sensitise on the negative effect of female genital mutilation which is inimical to the girl child as well as to sensitise the people on the forthcoming 2027 general elections in order to obtain their voter’s cards and participate in elections.

The organisation declared the campaign open at the Ibagwa Nike Town Hall, Enugu East Local Government  Area of Enugu State, where they commemorated the 2025 International Women’s Day, IWD, hosted by their patron and the traditional ruler of Ibagwa Nike, Igwe Emmanuel Ugwu, Ezeokwe 1.

Addressing the crowd during the flagg off ceremony, the president/founder of WOSCONET, Amb. Amaka Nweke said that they would go to towns , markets and villages to sensitise them on the fact that violence against women and girls are not fashionable as well as that female genital mutilation is no longer in vogue, in addition to sensitising them on the need to participate in electoral process.

Amb. Nweke said: “We want to reach out to our rural women to be part of the ongoing grassroots movement in the state.  We flagged off our market sensitisation for different local governments in the state.

“We want to reach out to our women in the markets. You know women are busy.  They are in the markets most of the time and they don’t get to hear information about certain things.  We want to take it to them so that they will not say they did not hear because they were in the market.

“So, we are taking it to their doorsteps on the issues concerning gender-based violence, ways to avoid it and where it exists already, how to come of it. We are also going to be talking about female genital mutilation, to end the abuse of the girl child.  We shall tell them that circumcision of the girl child is no more happening, is no more in existence, so that anybody practicing it is against the girl child human rights.

“We are equally going to start voter education.  INEC has called on the people of the state of Nigerians to come out and get their voter’s card.  If one has issues concerning a defaced voters card, lost card, this is the time to go to INEC to get registered.  So, we want to take information to our women.”
