Nigeria’s key opposition leader, Mr Peter Obi, has provided insight into why he visited the Governor of Bauchi State, Bala Mohammed.

NewsBits recalls that Obi, alongside some South-East Senators, was in Bauchi State earlier on Thursday, where he interfaced with the governor. Addressing journalists after the closed-door meeting, Obi said he came to seek the governor’s support in their quest to unite Nigeria.

The ADC chieftain, who is a presidential candidate hopeful of the party, said: “I am here to solicit the support and cooperation of his excellency and the stakeholders of Bauchi in our quest to unite this country.

“We want to have a united country to build a future for our children. The country cannot continue the way it is today. “We are headed in the wrong direction, and we need to reverse that for every direction, that’s why we are here to seek his support in building a new Nigeria, that’s for the benefit of all.

“Building Nigeria, the way it used to be, where children of nobody will learn to be somebody without knowing anybody.” The visit comes amid speculation that Governor Mohammed may soon defect from the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, to the ADC.

Speaking after the meeting, the governor confirmed that the engagement centred on political strategy, alignment, and possible collaboration among opposition forces. He said, “This is why we say we have to be strategic; neither ADC nor PDP is left alone, we are all in the opposition, and that is why I said it is a political discussion.

“I will not let you know what we have discussed in terms of the l’s and the T’s we have crossed, but certainly it’s about realignment, alignment, and cooperation so that we can have a common platform. We cannot do without a platform.”
